A new paradigm for high-density star formation in the Universe : Cosmic Rays as the driver for a bimodal IMF

Résumé :
I will describe how the extreme Cosmic-Ray-Dominated-Regions
(CRDRs) expected in all compact intense starbursts,
nearby Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) or distant
sub-mm bright galaxies (SMGs), will dramatically re-set the
initial conditions for star formation in their UV-shielded
cores. This mechanism, unlike far-UV photons, is unhindered
by dust extinction, and naturally yields a top-heavy IMF
in compact starbursts. All this is actually testable
with special measurements that ALMA will be capable of.
