by Lars Lindberg Christensen (HST/ESO, Germany) The European and American Hubble Space Telescope has just passed its 12th birthday, and has entered maturity. Four times the observatory has been serviced by Space Shuttle astronauts, and first-class science is pouring from Hubble in ever increasing amounts. In this talk we will look at Hubble in detail, at its interesting history and at some of the many scientific results it has produced. Finally an overview of Hubble's successor, the NASA/ESA/CSA Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) will be given.
