Workshop on Supernovae and dust

Deadline to register:

The 2003 Supernovae and dust workshop will be held in Paris, in Salle de l'Atelier (building no16 on this map) at Observatoire de Paris (77, avenue Denfert-Rochereau, 75014 Paris). Note that it will be restricted to 50 participants. The goal is to investigate the various issues that concerns the presence of dust in high-z galaxies and high-z supernovae.

(1) Could dust bias the Type Ia Supernovae sample, and affect our measurements of a cosmological constant?

(2) Future SN missions (SNAP, CFHLS) aim at the detection of high-z Type Ia Supernovae, up to z=1.7. A large fraction of dusty starburst galaxies are expected at these remote epochs. It is a priori difficult to disentangle the various type of supernovae. How will be the effects of dust and of the contamination of Type Ib,c and II Supernovae skew identification of Type Ia Supernovae, for example by biasing photometric classification schemes?

(3) With the advent of these new Supernovae projects, those background events (Type Ib,c and II Supernovae) will constitute a unique database to select starburst galaxies. They could constitute a unique source catalogue to study galaxy formation with submillimeter/millimiter instruments like IRAM and ALMA, as well as optical/near infrared instruments (VLT, JWST). Which strategy ought to be defined/proposed?

The program will be spread over 2 days.
